Adopt up-to-date farming methods for success: Talib

BINTULU: The farming community which contributes a great deal to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth needs to adopt latest farming techniques.

Jepak assemblyman Datuk Talib Zulpilip in making the cal said this was imperative in view of the increase in demand for good products globally.

He said farmers had to keep improving their work in terms of productivity and product quality.

“High quality and productivity will determine the total success of the farmers in the present challenging global market,” he added.

He said Malaysia had the potential to be an important food supplier if the local farmers utilised all the resources that the country had.

“The government has introduced and implemented various policies and programmes to improve the quality of agro-based industry products,” Talib said when officiating at the Bintulu Agriculture Department open day here last Saturday.

The assemblyman urged farmers to equip themselves with the latest knowledge so as to be more competitive.

“Ina competitive market, we must not only come up with consistent supply of products but also ensure our products are to the global market standard,” he added.

He said the government through the Agriculture Department provided the necessary courses, training, programmes and subsidies to the local farmers to enable them to achieve success.

He stressed that sophisticated, productive and brilliant farmers played an important role in determining the future direction of the country’s agriculture sector.

Agriculture Department director Paul Vincent Ritom and Bintulu Agriculture Department chief Musa Bahazim were among those present at the function.

Talib also presented certificates to some of the outstanding farmers in Bintulu Division.
