SMK Assyakirin is debating champion
BINTULU: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Assyakirin emerged champion in the divisional Inter-Secondary Schools’ Debate for the Chief Minister’s Cup at SMK Baru here yesterday.
They defeated SMK Tatau in the finals and would represent Bintulu in the state-level competition to be held in Kuching.
Debaters in the champion team were Wilson Ngaring Lim Bungau, Patrick Nari Blansai both From 4 students, Sylvester Effeny Nyalu, a Form 6 student and their substitute debater, Wadi Minggu, a Form 3 student.
Wilson, who was also best debater, said their vistory was a group effort.
He said for yesterday’s battle, they spent five days preparing and collecting materials with help from their teachers.
The materials were obtained from various resources like the internet and library.
They were the opposer in yesterday’s competition with the topic ‘The United Nations had failed to preserve the world peace’.
Asked on their prospects in the state-level competition, Wilson said they were looking forward to beat defending champion SMK Marudi.
“On the paper they look dominant and stronger but hard work is the key of success though the path will be tough,” Wilson said.
Asked if he would vie to be the best debater at state-level, he said he would try his best.
Five secondary schools took part in the competition yesterday namely SMK Kidurong, SMK Baru, SMK Bintulu, SMK Tatau and SMK Assyakirin.
Mohd Khaider Arebi, a representative of Bintulu Education Officer Fatimah Matair, handed over the prizes.
Also present were SMK Baru Parent-Teacher Association chairman Kadir Jaya and Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) representative Khalid Suud.
Yesterday’s competition was jointly organised by Bintulu Education Office and RTM in collaboration with SMK Baru as the host.
