BINTULU: The government through the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism will always help the consumers be they rural or urban dwellers especially during this economic downturn.
Its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said this at the launch of a price reduction campaign at New World Mart Sdn Bhd in Parkcity Commerce Square here yesterday.
He said that rural people were always the most affected during the economic downturn because of the rising prices.
“The government is aware of this and is doing all it can to help them. That is why this campaign is also extended to the rural areas to involve small shops,” he said.
Speaking to reporters at the press conference later, he said by next year his ministry would start to standardise the prices of several controlled items during major festivals such as Gawai Dayak in Sarawak and Pesta Kaamatan in Sabah.
He said the government would try its best to ease the burden of the people regardless of their station in life in tandem with the ‘1Malaysia’ concept of the Prime Minister Datuk Sei Najib Tun Razak.
He said the campaign by his ministry, which started in October 2008 was introduced to create greater awareness among the retailers on the need to reduce the prices fro some of their goods in order to ease the burden of the people during these trying times.
“To date 26 organisations and 228 outlets have been taking part in the campaign,” he said.
New World Mart started its one-month campaign yesterday and it involves more than 200 items.
Ismail saud apart from the supermarket, a food operator –Famous Mama Café – here was also joining in the campaign by offering price reduction of seven items.
Thecampign, which started on April 27, will end on Dec 31.
He said that in big cities like Kuala Lumpur there was no problem in asking retailers to reduce their prices. They themselves would voluntarily reduce prices in order to compete with their rivals to attract more customers.
