Enough essential items for Raya: Ministry

Over 260 metric tonnes sugar will arrive on Aug 31 to specifically cater to high demand of upcoming festival

BINTULU: Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism (Bintulu branch) acting chief Muhammad Daud Ali yesterday assured the public that all essential items meant for the Hari Raya celebrations were in sufficient supply.

As such, there should be no panic buying among the general public.

He also said that no reports about any shortage of essential items had been made, and at the moment the sugar stock here amounted to about 217 metric tonnes – enough to go around for everybody. More than 260 metric tonnes would arrive on Aug 31 to specifically cater to the high demand of the upcoming festival.

Daud told reporters this after the launch of the ministry-organised ‘price tag’ campaign at Pasar Tamu here, which the Resident Ismail Mohd Hanis had the honour to open.

“So far, we have not received any report whatsoever from the consumers regarding any drastic increase in prices of essential items. Sugar is still sold at RM1.60 per kg here,” he said.

The (price tag) campaign, which runs from July 27 to Aug 31, is aimed at creating greater awareness among the traders about the need to practise proper business conduct and the need to comply with the rules and regulations.

It is also aimed at telling the consumers to be smart and be able to compare prices from several outlets before eventually buying the items.

“Price tags are not only meant for display on essential items, but for all goods,” Daud said, adding that failure to display the price tags would render traders liable to a fine not exceeding RM15,000 or two-year jail or both.

Ismail meanwhile said the campaign was one of the many ways to educate consumers how to spend their money wisely by comparing prices from one outlet to another.

The chairman of Bintulu Hawkers Association, Voon Ching Leong, welcomed the ministry’s effort on the price tag campaign that should be practised by all traders including his members.
