Bintulu to introduce new parking coupons next year
BINTULU: Effective Jan 1, 2013, Bintulu Division will be introducing scratch parking coupons to replace the current tab coupons in an effort to provide motorists with better services.
The general manager of Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) Datu Mohidin Ishak said the new coupons would be sold at 50sen per hour.
He said the current tab coupons (20sen, 50sen and 80sen) at per half an hour rate have been used since 1997.
“We announced this in advance so that motorists would know about it, however, those who still have the tab coupons can continue to use them until the end of the year,” he said.
Mohidin said this to media after officiating at the launch of Motorcycle Wheel Lock bays, which is under the Safe City Programme, in front of the KWSP premises here recently.
He added the new coupon is easy to use and at a cheaper rate.
“There are about 3,700 parking spaces that require the coupons in Bintulu and we plan to gazette some more parking spaces in the near future as there are still many yet to be gazetted,” he said.
He said it is important to gazette the parking space to prevent some car owners from taking up these spaces the whole day, as these parking bays are supposed to give convenience to all motorists.
At the same time it would also better facilitate the traffic police to regulate the parking situation in the town, he added.
“Last year some 20 cases were brought to court involving the failure of car owners to pay the parking compound and other parking offences will also be taken into account,” said Mohidin.
Nevertheless, he said BDA board had agreed to offer 20 per cent discount on parking compounds that were paid within three working days.
Besides, he said seasonal parking coupons (monthly) are still in use, similar to the approach being implemented by big cities like Kuching, Miri and Sibu.
Daily coupon priced at RM6.35 is also introduced by BDA.
Also present at the event were BDA Local Authority secretary cum senior manager for Environment Section, Wan Ibrahim Wan Ali; BDA Properties manager Sairi Naim; Bintulu police chief Superintendent Madang Usat; Bintulu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Datuk Sia Hiong Ngie and Bintulu Safe City secretary cum planning unit manager Weslley Mancha.
